Norfolk Southern Corporation filed a motion in South Carolina federal court on Friday, Dec. 22, for preliminary approval of an agreement for a class settlement with plaintiffs’ counsel that would provide compensation for personal injury claims associated with the company’s Jan. 6, 2005, derailment in Graniteville, S.C.

Railroad operator Norfolk Southern Corp. on Tuesday said it reached a proposed settlement with plaintiffs in a South Carolina court case that would compensate people who were injured after a train derailment early last year.

If approved by the court, the settlement would provide varying levels of compensation for people who were injured and who received medical treatment, or were hospitalized, as a result of the derailment and subsequent release of chlorine.
